Canteen Kitchen is another little Gold Coast spot, located down in Burleigh Heads that my sister and I visited very recently. The Gold Coast seems to have such a variety of little cafes about, and its quite refreshing to get out of Brisbane, take a drive down there and discover something new.
Note that there are two separate entities which may confuse you when trying to find this place, Canteen Coffee is the original location which is one of the only places on the coast to go if you want a good coffee, doing a great job serving up beans from Deluxe Boutique Coffee Roasters on a La Marzocco Strada. Canteen Kitchen is the second location from these guys, opening only two doors up from Canteen Coffee, and is where you will want to head if you also want to find some good eats. If you are only after coffee, sit down at Canteen Coffee.
Canteen Kitchen has an interestingly Middle Eastern inspired breakfast menu. Seating involves larger communal or group tables outside, and smaller tables inside. We found indoors a bit small and stuffy and elected to sit outside in the cool breeze.
We both immediately ordered the Cold Press Iced Latte, which was served slightly sweetened in a tall glass with plentiful ice. It was very refreshing but still enough to awaken the senses.
My little sister went with the Lamb Kofta, Middle Eastern beans and Poached eggs served on sourdough. The beans were really what made this dish, although the lamb was moist and flavoursome, and the poached eggs were perfect, but the beans had a certain wow factor, although were a tiny bit oily.
I decided that Scrambled eggs, labneh, za’atar flatbread and green olives sounded great, and ordered some lamb kofta for myself to add some more bulk to the meal. The bread was great with a coating of dukkah and a smear of labneh being the perfect combination. The scrambled eggs may have seemed out of place here, but are what puts the dish into the ‘breakfast’ category and really seemed to go quite nicely. More olives were definitely required though, I have a hankering for green olives that won’t stop.
Tucked away behind the main drag in Burleigh, Canteen Kitchen is a nice spot that serves up great coffee and has a menu thats just a little bit different to your usual bacon and eggs.
